DARDEN. BASEBALL.
Lou Brock of the St. Louis Cardinals. Illustration from a story in Black Sports Magazine, circa 1975. Mixed media on board. 403x703 mm; 17 1/4x34 1/4 inches. Signed "Darden" in lower left corner.

A dynamic image showing the Hall of Famer stealing a base from Chicago Cubs second baseman Dave Rosello as umpire Satch Davidson calls the play in the May 25, 1974 game.

Brock set the single-season stolen base record later that season, on September 10. It is likely that this artwork (based on a series of photographs of that game by Heinz Kluetmeier for Sports Illustrated) accompanied an article about that victory. At the time of his famous trade to the Cardinals from the Chicago Cubs in 1964, Brock was a .251 hitter, about to hit .348 with 33 stolen bases for the Cardinals the rest of that season. He would go on to join the 3,000-hit club and make baseball history as one of the greatest base-stealers, with a then-record total of 938 thefts.
